My Vintage Kitschen

Falling in love with Nintendo DS

Where have I been? Celebrating the Fourth of July and my 28th birthday. Yes, there’s really little difference in the awesomeness that is the birth of our nation and the birth of me. I know.

I used some of my birthday winnings to pick up a new video camera, lots of great Pyrex and a pink Nintendo DS. What? Yes, I bought a video game system. But this isn’t my first.

For my 25th birthday, I got the anniversary edition Game Boy Advance that looks like an old NES controller. Lots of fun. But of course, times change and games get cooler.

I will say this- my gaming skills are most likely stuck in 1989. That’s why I thought a girly pink DS system would be perfect for me.

As I felt like I was being laughed at all over the store, I bought this yesterday, the Think Pink Bundle:

Mock me, if you must, but I am becoming a pro at “Cooking Mama.” I’m also really surprised at the amount of female friends and strangers I’ve mentioned this to who have said, “Oh, I have a pink DS, too.”

I’m really rather fascinated with Nintendo’s push at women. They’ve got big names like Carrie Underwood and Liv Tyler showing off this DS systems, and I saw a really interesting clip on the Today Show during my Indiana vacation about these Nintendo cocktail parties.

I guess for me, buying a gaming system isn’t that odd. I grew up with Nintendo, and now I’m just waiting to find an available Wii and Wii Fit to make myself even more of a nerd in my late 20s. But I’m curious to hear from women who didn’t grow up with video games and how they might be drawn to this. Check out this article for some thoughts on loving Nintendo as an adult.

Until then, I must feed my Nintendog. And research new games to try.

I just got a DS last year specifically so I could play New Super Mario Bros. It is pretty amazing if you haven’t checked out yet. I got it so I had something to do on my flight to Amsterdam, and beat it 2 days before my actual flight. I still played it though, trying to beat all the things I missed the first time.

I also would like a Wii very much, but don’t want to pay more than the retail price. That shit drives me crazy.

Nintendo DS is just a gateway drug. It won’t be long before you buy an Xbox and are “wtfpwning noobs” in Halo or some such.

I like the idea of creating a Pyrex system to store all the gear associated w/the DS. That’d be rad. Combining slick/mod w/old school.

The pink bundle is off the charts cute. Cooking mama is really sweet…if you’re into puzzle games, Professor Leyton is gorgeous graphically + a lot of fun in terms of plot…

If I see you at Blogher, we can play. I’ll have my DSs on me…
